I bought some cheap fleece, eyeballed some “fins”, stuffed with the same $0.99 pillow stuffing, loosely sewed them to the costume (so they can easily be removed), folded back the monster eyes and horns on her hood, and POOF! Insta-Dory. Next year, guess what Beck will be for Halloween? Yes, probably a monster. I found a monster costume from Costco for $12 that was Dory colors(ish) and decided to make it work. I loosely hand-sewed the shell onto the frog costume (so it's easily removed), and voila! Same with Dory… I couldn't for the LIFE OF ME find a Dory costume online. I eyeballed a “shell” shape, cut strips and tied them together, stuffed with the stuffing from a $0.99 thrift store pillow. I found some remnant fleece fabric, also $2. Take “squirt” for example… I saw the frog costume at a consignment sale for $2 and decided to make it work as a turtle. Plus, with how expensive fabric is now days, buying (the right way) is often cheaper than a complete DIY! My method is: DIY where I can, then buy store-bought pieces to complete the outfit. I am no crafter and could never pull off sewing a costume from scratch. Mix store-bought costumes with DIY pieces. So, what were we this year? Ready for it… Finding Nemo! I hope to milk it for as many years as possible until my kids realize how embarrassing, uncool, and wacko I am. Not that I'm into the icky uber creepy stuff, but more that I LOVE to dress up, LOVE to throw themed parties, and LOVE candy…so basically modern-day Halloween was made just for me.Įach year I insist on doing family theme costumes. Glue underneath shell on the top and bottom. We all know I'm obsessed with Halloween. Measure Elastic so it will fit around child’s shoulders like a backpack. Lay out on top of the shell and trim where you need to make everything match up. pin shell templates on top and cut out so you end up with 6 shell details total but only have to cut the shapes once.įreehand two rectangular shapes that follow the curve of the bottom of the shell. Fold over light green fabric so it is doubled up. Then trace three shapes for the side of the shell on a piece of paper and cut out. then cut out and lay on top of the shell. Cut out and use to trace shapes on light green fabric. Glue feet on underside of dark green shell on either side of tail.Ĭut out a few small shapes on the light green fabric to glue on one side of each foot to add some detail.įreehand three shapes for middle of the shell on a piece of paper. It helps if you pin felt layers together so it all stays in place while you are cutting. Using foot template trace onto green felt and cut out so that you end up with two feet but only have to cut once. Fold dark green felt over so it is doubled up. Then glue tail on the underside of the shell so it is sticking out from center bottom of shell and the light green is facing up.ĭraw leg onto a piece of paper and cut out as a template. Glue light green felt on top of dark green leaving a little outline of dark green felt. glue down small opening.Ĭut out a tail on the dark green felt and a slightly smaller tail on light green felt. leave a small opening and stuff the shell with the stuffing to give it dimension. Wrap dark green felt around cardboard shell and glue to the underside. Use cardboard shell to trace shape on light green fabric and cut out. Light green fabric-patterned if available (I found a light green tie dye flannel that gives some depth to the shell)Ĭut out an oval/shell shape on the cardboard about the size of your child’s back, preferably a little bigger. Inspired by Scratch and Stitch’s Seat Turtle Baby Costume you can find HERE I was able to finish it during nap time so about 2 hours. This costume came together fast and requires no sewing. So it was a unanimous decision that she should be a turtle for Halloween. Almost everyday we have to visit what the kids call turtle bridge so she can watch them swim around. I thought like not having to plan birthday parties during COVID I might escape having to make costumes but i guess not. But we are still all in on costumes, or rather my kids are. The sorting session will be a lot smaller, but silver lining for my waistline is I will have a lot less candy to eat after. otherwise, the kids will come back to the house and do a scavenger hunt in our front yard for candy. This year we are going to go on a walk around the neighborhood to look at decorations and if there happens to be houses who have candy set up away from having to knock on the door we will trick or treat.
